Cannot add or remove an additional HANA host after the first attempt failed

  1. Starting HANA Lifecycle Management
  2. Select the option for Add Additional Host

The first attempt to add an additional HANA Host fails with an error “Addition of host to the SAP HANA System failed”.

The cause of this error is typically contained within the HLM log files. Once that issue is resolved, if you try to add a host again, the following error will pop-up.

“The specified additional host ‘hostname’ is already a part of the HANA System but it should not be”

When you try to remove the node, it will fail with the error “Remove host from the SAP HANA system” failed with message “Execution of hdbremovehost failed”

The logs indicate that hdbremovenode tried to start the nameserver on the failed node and could not.

1) Try to remove the host through Studio
– Go to Studio > Landscape > Hosts
– Right click and select “Remove Host”
– Wait for the table reorg to finish

2) Update the landscape description
– Open the file /<hana shared>/<SID>/lm_structure/landscapeDescription.xml
– Check if the new host is added here. If it is here, then remove it. ** Make sure to make a copy of the original before making any changes to this file **
– Here is an example of what you would remove:

<name>SAP NEWDB</name>
<caption>SAP HANA PLATFORM EDIT. 1.0</caption>
<caption>SAP HANA PLATFORM EDIT. 1.0: SAP Host Agent</caption>

3) Remove the system manually
– Login to the master host (one of the existing hosts) as <sid>adm
– Execute /usr/sap/<SID>/HDB<inst>/exe/hdbnsutil -removehost <hostname to remove>

[If that is not successful]

– Execute /usr/sap/<SID>/HDB<inst>/exe/hdbnsutil -removehost <hostname to remove> –force

[If that is not successful]

– Log in to the host that you want to remove and then remove the following directories:
– As root user, delete the <sid>adm user (userdel <sid>adm)
– As root user, restart the SAP Host Agent (/usr/sap/hostctrl/exe/saphostexe -restart)
